Biography – STÉPHEN DELATTRE
Dance Career…
Stéphen Delattre was born in France and received his initial professional dance education at the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Danse – Roland Petit” in Marseille from 1993 to 1999.
His first engagement led him to the “Jeune Ballet International – Rosella Hightower” in Cannes followed by various engagements as a soloist dancer at the state theatres of Saarbrucken, Braunschweig, Hanover, Augsburg and Mainz.
Stéphen has danced repertoire from over 40 iconic and internationally respected choreographers the likes of George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Roland Petit, Mauro Bigonzetti, Nacho Duato, Angelin Preljocaj, Christian Spuck and Marco Goecke, among others. He has also had the privilege to be invited to appear at many festivals and galas around the world. Stephen’s career was punctuated by numerous featured roles, many of which were also created on him. To name a few, he is perhaps most proud of his interpretations as “The White Rabbit” in Alice in Wonderland, “Mercutio” in Romeo and Julia, and “The Prince” in Traumgekrönt.
Choreographic Career…
Stéphen started choreographing already at age thirteen, and has since become an inventive and passionate creator who draws on both his classical roots and the contemporary influences of his personal career to describe a creative language that is uniquely personal, versatile, and emotionally charged.
After choreographing many of his earlier works concurrent to his soloist dance career, Stephen arrived at a turning point in 2011 when he created his first full evening work Poetry takes Form at the Mainzer Kammerspiel Theatre. This inspired him to take the bold step in 2012 of founding his own company (together with executive director Martin Opelt) the Delattre Dance Company, where he is currently both artistic director and resident choreographer.
Stephen has been fortunate to be invited to make works as a guest choreographer for many German theaters and dance companies. Among them are the: Saarland State Theatre Saarbrucken, State Theatre Braunschweig, State Opera House Hanover, State Theatre Augsburg, State Theatre Stuttgart, the Lucky Trimmer Tanz Performance in Berlin, State Theatre Giessen, State Theatre Koblenz, and the State Theatre Gärtnerplatz Munich.
His choreographies are also sought after internationally, with repertoire overtaken or commissioned in the Kielce Dance Company in Poland, the Modern Dance Theatre of Ankara in Turkey, the Busan International Dance Festival in Korea, the National Centre for Performing Arts of Beijing in China, the Modern Dance Festival in Portugal, and the International Stage Dance Gala in Italy and in Japan.
Stephen has also had the unique pleasure of being commissioned directly by star dancers themselves for custom creations for guesting and galas from such companies as the State Theatre Karlsruhe, the English National Ballet of London, the Royal Danish Ballet, the National Opera Dresden, and the Stuttgart Ballet.
Stephen is also regularly and repeatedly asked to serve as a judge for prestigious choreographic competitions over the years and is already slated to be on the panel for the 2019 “International Competition for Choreographers” in Hanover in Germany, the “Amsterdance” in Amsterdam, Holland, and the “Livorno in Danza” in Livorno, Italy.
